FESTIVAL CANCELLED
This year's festival lost the Parihaka trust about $30,000, a figure it has decided it cannot risk again.
The next event will be in 2012.
The team will spend that time working on ways to make the event viable and landscaping the festival site.
Parihaka's three-day music festival has run at a loss three out of the five times it has run, with the shortfalls usually gained back with the following year's profits.
However, Parihaka Management Trust chair Ruakere Hond said this year's loss was unexpected as the Parihaka team had put in a lot of effort to ensure it was viable.

FESTIVAL POWERED BY KIWI SOFTWARE ENTREPRENEUR
The Parihaka International Peace Festival, held this year from January 8th to 10th,
is rooted in Parihaka's tradition of peaceful resistance, but underneath the long
history and traditions, a Te Atiawa software entrepreneur continues to make sure
to keep the underlying technology modern.
Patrick Moore, along with his company Endev, decided in 2006 that he wanted to help
his whanau with the festival. Endev became the technology sponsors for the event
in order to implement web technology to optimise the arrival and booking experience
for festival attendees.
By creating a more advanced ticketing system for faster online booking and the ability
for volunteers to organise tasks online, Moore's system has freed up cash flow,
allowing organisers to keep the event affordable and convenient for attendees. The
online booking system deployed by Endev was first implemented in 2007, and the 2010
festival included a new eTicketing system that allowed volunteers to use a barcode
reader to scan tickets.
The festival was launched in 2005 and this year's line-up included performers such
as: Tiki Taane, Smashproof, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Cornerstone Roots and Ladi 6.

"Parihaka is the perfect place to deliver a korero about the growing resistance among
Maori gangs to the methamphetamine epidemic – the end of 'Maori gangism' and the
rise of whanau ora."
"GANG members of the 1970s are now grandparents and we are asking ourselves, 'where
did this come from, this self-abuse? It didnt come from here, it didn't come from
Aotearoa. There has to be a better way for this generation. We have to burn these
destructive bridges."
MEANWHILE, preparations are well underway for this weekend's festival at Parihaka

South Taranaki contractors.
AMONG the forty-odd performers are Fat Freddy's Drop, Herbs, Smashproof, SJD and

SMASHPROOF TO PLAY PARIHAKA INTERNATIONAL PEACE FESTIVAL
As organisers count down the final weeks to the fifth Parihaka International Peace
Festival, they have confirmed more acts in the latest announcement.
Smashproof will be performing on the Sunday night in what will be the South Auckland's
biggest gig to date. The trio, who have just returned from an Australian tour, smashed
a long-standing record for a New Zealand act in May of this year when their single,
"Brother" celebrated eleven consecutive weeks at number one. Group member Young
Sid said yesterday,
"Playing at Parihaka is a great honour. The people of Parihaka would be the most
humble in this world. They are the creators of non-violent action and they've been
through more than most people can imagine in the last 150 years – confiscated land,
imprisonment, poverty, the list goes on. We are very proud to be involved in the
Parihaka International Peace Festival."
Other acts announced yesterday were Te Kupu & MC Wiya and the Brian Hatcher Band.
They join an already stellar line-up that includes The Bellbirds, Fat Freddy's Drop,
Herbs Unplugged, House of Shem, Moana & The Tribe, Tikii Taane & The Dub Soldiers,
and SJD, plus over 30 other acts, including a selection of Taranaki's hottest bands,
plus guest speakers and films yet to be announced.
Other confirmed activities are the return of Stephen Taberner, the acclaimed Australian-based
choirmaster who will again organise and rehearse the Parihaka Festival Choir, and
Toru Wha, the Parihaka Ukelele band.
Tickets for the festival, held at the historic pa in South Taranaki, are selling
steadily and are available at www.parihaka.com
MEDIA RELEASE - TSUNAMI RELIEF
The fifth of November is a significant date in history and it is important for us
to learn about the events and actions that have shaped the society and communities
that we live in. As a network of Samoan activists and artists across Aotearoa /
New Zealand, we have chosen to highlight links between Parihaka and Samoa on the
128th anniversary of the invasion of Parihaka settlement in 1881.
Almost as soon as the devastating impact of the 30 September tsunami on Samoa unfolded
we began to discuss and negotiate ways we could work together to maximize our efforts
to raise funds. A desire to assist with the immediate recovery and the rebuilding
of the areas severely affected by the damage caused resulted in a range of fundraising
initiatives.
We have worked intensively in our own regions for the past four weeks to initiate
and support various events. On a national level, the I Love the Islands concerts
held in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, New Plymouth and Wellington linked many
of us in an extraordinary demonstration of unity and compassion.
The Director of the Parihaka International Peace Festival, Te Miringa Hohaia, made
a substantial gift of one hundred 2010 Festival tickets to be used to raise funds
to support the reconstruction work in Samoa as a gesture of solidarity and sympathy.
Organisers of the I Love the Islands Dunedin concert launched the initial announcement
of this outstanding contribution with five tickets featured in a raffle prize pool.
Te Miringa noted the historical links between Taranaki leaders including Sir Maui
Pomare and the leaders of the Samoan Independence movement known as the Mau, the
ongoing support for the festival from Samoan artists, musicians and volunteer crew
and the continued relationships between Samoan colleagues and the people of Parihaka
for over two decades as the basis of this generous donation.
The tickets will be distributed to regional organisers as they continue to raise
funds to support the needs of the families and villages directly affected by the
destruction and despair caused.
As we mark the fifth week since the tsunami struck we honour the generosity of Parihaka
and acknowledge the 5 November as a day to commemorate the place of Parihaka in
our collective history and the promise of Parihaka in our future.

PRESS COUNCIL RULES ON PARIHAKA COMPLAINT
The Press Council has partly upheld a complaint against the Taranaki Daily News
