Taukumekume (Debate)
Kaupapa:
2010 is the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the NZ Wars. On 17 March 1860,
British Troops declared war and descended on Waitara. This date stands as the defining
moment in the history of Aotearoa, for all the wrong reasons.
The Waitangi Tribunal
found the Muru Raupatu, the subsequent massive land confiscations, has had a devastating
effect on the iwi of Taranaki - socially, economically, politically, educationally
and organisationally.
For the people of PARIHAKA and Te Atiawa, the wrongs have
not yet been righted. The wounds are still raw. So, 150 years on, the question is,
'Is peace truly achievable for the people of Taranaki?'
